Tips and Tricks to Clean Hummingbird Feeders
Clean, fresh nectar is essential to keep hummingbirds well-fed and healthy, especially in hot summer weather. Hummingbird feeders, however, can be notoriously difficult to clean thoroughly. Fortunately, there are some easy tips and tricks that can make cleaning any style of hummingbird feeder a simple task.
Why Clean Feeders Matter
Spoiled, fermented nectar is worse than unappetizing to hummingbirds – it can actually cause illness and even death if mold or bacteria has formed. Furthermore, a dirty feeder will smell more strongly, which could attract unwanted visitors such as rats, raccoons, or bears.
Spoiled nectar will also grow thick and sludgy. As the sugar crystallizes, it can clog feeding ports and impede the flow of nectar so hummingbirds cannot sip so easily. Those clogs can cause cracks or breaks in the feeder, creating leaks or making the feeder unusable.
If hummingbirds are unable to feed or the nectar is unpalatable, the birds may move on to different feeding areas with easier food sources. Because hummers have great geographic memories, this may mean they no longer return to a dirty or clogged feeder, and it may be necessary to start completely over attracting these flying jewels.
Easy Tips to Clean Hummingbird Feeders
It isn’t hard to thoroughly clean hummingbird feeders, but it does take a bit more than just soap, water, and scrubbing. While that is the first step, it is much easier than many birders realize to clean these feeders.
- Disassemble the Feeder Completely
For the most thorough clean, the feeder should be taken apart as much as possible. This will make it easier to reach every nook and ensure there is no lingering residue. Don’t force it, however – crystallized sugar may have cemented some parts together and brute force can cause breakage. - Heat It Up!
Instead of spending a lot of time and elbow grease with scrubbing, scrubbing, and more scrubbing, simply fill a deep sink with very hot water, as hot as you can stand. Fortunately, you won’t be sticking your hands in the water, so feel free to heat it up. - Simply Soak
Carefully submerge all parts of the feeder into the hot water, ensuring that all connections are deep in the water to thoroughly soak. This will dissolve any stuck-on sugar and clear out feeding ports, no scrubbing necessary. Stir or agitate the feeder parts a few times to further loosen and remove stuck-on grit. - Play With Pipe Cleaners
A pipe cleaner is the perfect tool to get into tiny feeding ports and be sure they’re clear of any sugar crystals or sticky residue. Push and pull the pipe cleaner a few times through each feeding port, and use it for all the little crevices on the feeder to be sure everything is completely clean.
After the feeder is clean and air dried, it’s ready to reassemble, refill, and nurture a new flock of hungry hummers!
The Most Important Tip of All
The easiest, most common sense tip for cleaning hummingbird feeders is simply to increase the cleaning frequency. The more often a feeder is cleaned, the less risk there is of fermented or crystallized sugar clogging ports or endangering hungry birds. As a good rule of thumb, feeders can be cleaned every single time they are refilled – then you always know the nectar is absolutely fresh and healthy!
